An unusual Friedonian slave trader named Ginger Camus gave his slaves clean clothes and enough to eat, as well as providing them with an education, little knowing that this would eventually end up rocking the kingdom.

Summary[]

Souma complains they need more personnel, as even though they have Roroa who is good at economy, they still need people to help her. As the literacy rates are not high, Souma guesses he has no other choice but to draw talent from other countries, while also using the chance to do something else.

Slavery exists in Landia, and even in Freedonia. Although some of the slaves became such due to their crimes, but most had no choice but to sell themselves due to poverty. While physical and sexual abuse is forbidden, there are still many female slaves that were sexually abused, and many male slaves worked to death. Ginger Camus is a slave trader, who inherited the business from his now deceased grandfather. Ginger introduces himself to the slaves, who seem frightened. Sandria, who Ginger decides to call San, explains that unlike other slavers his grandfather treated them well, which is why they also grieve for him. He also believed that Ginger is too kind and won't be able to handle the business. Ginger comments to himself he was right as he wished to sell the slaves and start a new business. Sandria continues to explain that this means they will be sold, but no slaver will take them all and they will also be split. Sandria then gives him a whip, stating that a mere slave shouldn't give her opinion and awaits for Ginger to whip her. Sandria knew this was coming, but hope that after he hears her out, he would be able to at least find slavers that will keep the family members together. Realizing she cares for the rest, Ginger states he has no intention to keep the business, but at least will try selling them to good slavers and will take care of them until that happens.

Ginger then buys new clothes and food for the slaves. He then also starts teaching them to read and do arithmetic. Sandria wonders why he does it and Ginger explains this will add value to them. Sandria points out that limited number of people will buy educated slaves and there would be no point in this, if in the end they get sold to do manual labor. Ginger is still fine with his, as he doesn't intend to keep running the business and asks Sandria if she wants to learn too, but she explains her family owned a store and she already knows to read, write and do math. Ginger then wonders how she became a slave and Sandria states her father was tricked into taking on a debt by someone and had to sell one of his daughters to save the shop and his family. Sandria asks Ginger how are the sales going. Ginger explains that even though some buyers came, he has a good eye sizing people and knew they looked at the slaves only as tools. As he promised to sell them to good trustworthy people, he decided to not sell them to those buyers.

One morning, Ginger wakes from people knocking on his door, hearing he has slaves who can read, write and do math and wishing to buy them. Ginger isn't sure what is going on and the men end up explaining that Souma declared that the evaluation policy for the promotion and demotion of knights and noblemen will include the ability to govern one's territory. In order to govern, they need office skills, and thus the need of someone who can read, write and do math. Ginger explains that he has families and wants them to take the whole family. The noblemen realize that if they take the families, they will have a priority in the sale and can take more people who can read and write and start arguing between themselves on who will be buying more. Ginger then sales all the slaves, with the last two going to Piltory Sacracen, who even promises to set the slaves free and take them as his wives, leaving Sandria as Ginger's last slave. Ginger had made enough money to start a new business. He invites Sandria to sit and brings tea as thanks, stating he wouldn't have done it if she didn't had the courage to say what she said when they met. Sandria also thanks him for everything he had done for them. In that moment, disguised, Souma enters and wishes to buy Sandria, after which he will free her. Sandria agrees if Souma buys her for a higher price, so that Ginger can fund his new business. Ginger denies, stating that for selfish reason, he wish Sandria to be an employee in his new business. Hearing that, Sandria also expresses her desire to remain with Ginger.

Roroa and Aisha then enter with Roroa commenting that Sebastian is right and Ginger is indeed fascinating slave trader. Souma then reveals himself, stating it was a test. Souma heard how he treated his slaves and how he got them to good places, with slave traders around the kingdom following his example and starting to educate their slaves. Souma had always wondered how to abolish the slavery in the kingdom, but if he implemented any sudden reforms by royal decree, societal upheaval would be unavoidable, which could even cause a civil war. Aisha then realizes that earlier by "something else", Souma meant education. What Ginger did was that he made the slaves become employees. Souma intends to make the slave traders become public servants, and establish a proper screening process. He also plans on building a job training center, so the slaves can get real jobs, instead of being used as disposable manual labor. Souma wishes to make Ginger the director of the job training center and gives him a sum of money to start his new business. With Sandria by his side, Ginger agrees to do it.

  • The title is adapted from ancient Japanese textbook Jitsugokyou, later quoted by Japanese educator Fukuzawa Yukichi in his book An Encouragement of Learning.
  • Souma is referring to the American Civil War when he mentions abolishing slavery will incite a civil war; the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, did so in the 1860s and sparked such.
    • However, Souma has evolved the slavery to the equivalent of American community service. While technical enslavement is still in play, it's just in name.
